Drumlanrig

Just 19 miles north of Dumfries you’ll find the beautiful and historically significant Drumlanrig Castle, home to some excellent bike trails.

From a gentle three km green ride along the river to the thrills of the 'old school' 20 km red route, the trails at Drumlanrig are well worth a visit.

On site there’s also bike hire at Rik’s Bike Shed, showers, bike wash and The Stableyard Cafe where you can refuel. Trail maps are on sale in the Castle Stableyard but here’s a sneak preview to whet your appetite.

The Riverside - Green, 3km

This short 3km cycle on quiet public roads taking in some fantastic views over the River Nith and wide open pasture, with mature trees towering overhead.
Alton Rigg - Green, 13km

An easy 13km woodland ride passing Druids Loch, the Marr Burn and through the hamlet of Burnsands before a short steep climb rewards you with spectacular views down the Nith Valley. Sit back, enjoy the view and freewheel back to the Castle.
The Three Lochs - Green, 5km

Starting with spectacular views before heading into the woodland with its wide variety of wildlife and lochs for 5km, passing a large erratic boulder called the “Rocking Stone”, which stands prominently beside the route.

This was deposited when the glaciers retreated around 10,000 years ago. The stone no longer rocks since it was unseated by a couple of mischievous lads many years ago.
The Castle Round - Green, 8.5km

This 8.5km ride circles the Castle and treats riders to a mix of amazing scenery. It also follows in the tyre tracks of the inventor of the bike, Kirkpatrick Macmillan who lived and worked locally and who rode the world’s first pedal cycle to Glasgow.
Copy Cat - Blue, 9km

Shadowing the second half of the ‘Old School’, this trail is ideal for riders of different skill levels. Expect steep inclines, fast single track sections featuring lots of berms. The finale is the ride back to the Castle up the impressive main drive, 9km in total.
The Old School - Red, 20km

This is where it gets serious. This 20km trail has been built using traditional methods and means roots and lots of them. It is a red route with attitude featuring lots of tight bends, water features, protruding rocks, tightly packed trees and loads of roots to navigate. This is a very technical trail with the additional benefit of a 7km BAIL OUT route serving as a great second lap and which is an excellent trail in its own right.
Magic Eight - Red/Black, 8km

The black sections of the trail can be found as additional loops from the red trail, amounting to 8km in total, with the first run offering a host of real challenges for experienced and skilled riders. Steep ascents and descents include tight switchbacks and drop offs – definitely not for the fainthearted.

A second black run at the tail end of the red trail will push your lungs to the maximum with TTT (too tight turn), a long and steady climb and a challenging drop off at the tail end.
